LUCKNOW, Jan. 8 -- A high-level delegation of the Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC), led by mayor Sushma Kharkwal, visited Ahmedabad, Gujarat, on an educational tour to study successful models of cleanliness, smart city management and modern urban development. The delegation visited a Waste-to-Energy plant, where officials studied the process of generating energy from municipal solid waste. They reviewed waste segregation, scientific disposal methods and environmental safeguards, noting that such projects promote cleanliness while contributing to alternative energy generation. The team also inspected the Kankaria Lakefront development, a successful example of combining lake rejuvenation, tourism and public amenities. The visit also included the Veer Savarkar Sports Complex in Naranpura, showcasing modern sports infrastructure and facilities for youth development. The delegation included municipal corporators, municipal commissioner Gaurav Kumar, additional municipal commissioners, zonal officers, chief engineer and other senior officials. The visit was aimed at understanding Ahmedabad's best practices in sanitation, technology-driven governance, waste management and urban infrastructure, with a view to replicating suitable models in Lucknow. Officials said the tour would help LMC strengthen its planning and implementation strategies for sustainable urban development. Members first visited the Atal Bridge Flower Show, where they observed innovative approaches to urban beautification and green development. The team then inspected the Smart City Command and Control Centre, which integrates traffic management, disaster response, civic services and real-time city monitoring through advanced technology. Mayor Sushma Kharkwal said Ahmedabad's achievements in sanitation and smart governance offered valuable lessons for Lucknow. She noted that Ahmedabad's top ranking in Swachh Survekshan 2024-25 reflected strong planning, technological innovation, and public participation.
