Lucknow, Oct. 7 -- The Lucknow Municipal Corporation on Monday sealed five of six Sahara Shahar gates of the sprawling township in the state capital's posh Gomti Nagar area amid protests in the area. Carried out amid heavy police presence, the action comes about 10 days after the civic body reclaimed 170 acres of government land on September 27, alleging that the property meant for residential, commercial, and green belt purposes was found to be in violation of lease conditions. LMC property officer Rameshwar Prasad said, "After sealing of Sahara Shahar the focus would be on getting every family out, which is staying inside the premises." "Because Sahara India Housing Ltd, Sahara Group, did not fulfil licence lease conditions, that's why the lease is cancelled. And LMC has taken back the possession of land," Prasad said. The sealing operation at Sahara Shahar started at 11.30am on Monday. The over five-hour exercise resulted in the sealing of the Sahara Shahar complex, including the bungalows of Sahara Group founder the late Subrata Roy and his wife Swapna Roy. As officials moved in to seal designated areas, employees of the complex strongly resisted the move. They demanded that the authorities first evacuate the families still living inside before asking the staff to leave. "Many families are still residing inside. Why is no action being taken against them?" questioned an employee during the protest. The situation turned chaotic with both residents and employees protesting. Many shouted slogans and criticised municipal officials. During the operation, livestock was relocated to Kanha Upvan. A heated exchange occurred between the staff and Sahara Group representatives, with employees demanding their pending salaries. Officials from the municipal corporation, including property officer Rameshwar Prasad and zonal officer Sanjay Yadav supervised the operation. Despite the resistance, the municipal team proceeded with the sealing operation as planned. Authorities had made a previous attempt on October 1, but were stopped after representatives from Sahara requested more time. The municipal corporation had then granted a three-day extension, which expired on Sunday. Some employees have expressed a willingness to continue working with the group. During the protest, a collective signature campaign was held outside the main gate....
