LMC initiates streetlight work on IT crossing-Munshipulia stretch
LUCKNOW, Oct. 17 -- Nearly eight years after the route from IT crossing to Munshipulia was left in darkness following metro construction, the LMC has sanctioned a long-awaited project to install LED streetlights along the 6-km corridor-a move expected to improve visibility and safety for thousands of daily commuters.
The project has now been sanctioned by mayor Sushma Kharkwal and municipal commissioner Gaurav Kumar. Chief engineer mechanical and electrical Manoj Prabhat confirmed that the installation work is expected to be completed by December 2025.
Prabhat stated that the issue persisted for years after streetlights were removed during metro construction and never replaced. "After the metro lines and bridges were laid, the lights were taken down and not reinstalled. We have now undertaken the project to provide proper illumination and ensure safer movement for commuters," Prabhat said.
He added that the LMC had previously installed lights on a portion of the route from Hanuman Setu to IT Crossing, but the remaining stretch could not be covered due to a shortage of funds. "This time, the work will extend from IT Crossing up to Munshipuliya intersection," he explained.
The project's estimated cost is around Rs 80 lakh, and the new system will utilise energy-efficient LED streetlights. Officials said the initiative will not only improve visibility but also enhance public safety, particularly for pedestrians and two-wheeler riders.
In April 2025, Hindustan Times reported on the inadequate lighting on the IT Crossing-Munshipuliya corridor, highlighting the risks faced by commuters.
An LMC official confirmed that planning and tendering work is currently underway....
