Lucknow, Aug. 19 -- The Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) has informed the National Green Tribunal (NGT), New Delhi, that it has cleared 13.86 lakh metric tonnes (MT) of legacy waste out of a total of 18.5 lakh MT. The update was shared during a hearing on August 6 before a bench headed by Justice Prakash Shrivastava, chairman of the NGT, along with expert member A Senthil Vel. The case concerns the unscientific handling of waste in Lucknow. It was first filed in 2022, with a second application submitted in 2023. In its report, the LMC said that as of July 31, it had cleared most of the legacy waste and will dispose of the remaining 4.64 lakh MT by December this year. The work is being done by Bhumi Green Energy, a Hyderabad-based company. The LMC also shared details of ongoing waste management efforts. It said that a waste processing plant run by Bhumi Green Energy is currently treating around 2,000 tonnes of fresh waste each day. The plant has a full capacity of 2,100 tonnes per day (TPD). Additionally, a 300 TPD Bio-CNG plant is being set up in Nadarganj and is expected to start operations by March 2026. Another Bio-CNG plant, with a 150 TPD capacity, is also in the works. The LMC highlighted various steps it has taken to manage both solid and legacy waste. It also informed the Tribunal that Lucknow has secured third place in the Swachh Survekshan 2024-2025 clean city rankings among cities with populations over 10 lakh. The NGT has asked the LMC to submit a detailed progress report on all these projects by January 31, 2026....
