LUCKNOW, Oct. 31 -- The report of assistant commissioner of police (ACP) Ankit Kumar's probe against sub-inspector Dhananjay Singh has revealed serious irregularities in the investigation of a gang rape case registered under Mahanagar police station here in September.
As per the report sent to the deputy commissioner of police (central) on Wednesday, the S-I, who was the investigating officer in the case, not only mishandled the investigation but also altered FIR sections to benefit one of the two accused. The ACP said on September 9, a gang rape case was lodged naming two accused -Prateek Gupta and Riyaz. During the investigation by the SI, the survivor's family initially did not know Riyaz's address which was later traced. After he was called for questioning, ACP Kumar found that SI Singh deliberately altered sections in the FIR, converting the case from gang rape to a marriage scam and later reverting it for one of the accused. This manipulation allegedly helped accused Riyaz secure bail.
The report also noted that Singh maintained contact with a family member of the accused and ignored key evidence. The ACP in his report said these acts raised serious doubts about the fairness of the investigation. He further said both the survivor and the complainant had earlier demanded a change of the investigating officer, citing bias and irregularities in the probe. The ACP, after verifying the lapses, recommended Singh's immediate removal as investigation officer and sought departmental inquiry against him. Later on Wednesday evening, an Anti-Corruption Organisation (ACO) team arrested Dhananjay Singh red-handed while taking 2 lakh bribe at his outpost. Acting on a complaint filed by Gupta , the ACO had conducted a confidential inquiry which confirmed that Singh demanded money to remove Gupta's name from the same case.
Following confirmation, the SP (Anti-Corruption) formed a trap team led by inspector Udayraj Nishad. On Thursday, an FIR was registered against Singh at Aliganj police station under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 based on inspector Nishad's complaint. Officials said the ACO is investigating possible links between the bribery incident and the manipulation in the earlier gang rape case, as mentioned in the report....
