Lko mayor opens PCTS despite road blockage concerns
LUCKNOW, Nov. 13 -- Mayor Sushma Kharakwal on Wednesday inaugurated the Bansmandi portable compactor transfer station (PCTS) near Lalkuan, despite earlier assurances from the municipal commissioner Gaurav Kumar that the issue would be reviewed and the road obstruction caused by the facility would be resolved.
The waste transfer station, built on one side of the road, blocks one carriageway and forces commuters to use a single lane. Residents and traders have termed the decision as "insensitive" and a "violation of promises" made by civic officials to shift the unit elsewhere.
In October this year, Hindustan Times had highlighted how the compactor station, managed by a private company, had occupied nearly 50 feet of the road, leading to daily traffic jams and foul odour in the busy commercial stretch.
Following the report, municipal commissioner Gaurav Kumar had assured an inspection and corrective action. However, the facility has now been inaugurated as a permanent structure at the same location, reigniting anger among shopkeepers and commuters.
Additional municipal commissioner Lalit Kumar and Zone 1 Incharge said the corporation could not find alternative land for the transfer station.
"We have advised the private agency to make necessary arrangements to ensure vehicle movement. Minor modifications will be done soon to ease congestion," Kumar said. He added that waste from three wards is directly brought to this transfer station for compacting and disposal.
Kumar even claimed that a small gap of space has been left beside the station so that the two wheelers could move but four-wheelers cannot pass, for which additional measures would be taken.
An LMC release read that the Baansmandi PCTS is part of a modernisation drive under the public-private partnership (PPP) model managed by Lucknow Swachhata Abhiyan (LSA). Officials said the facility will ensure scientific waste management and curb open dumping....
