Living under fake identity, fugitive for 40 yrs arrested in Gonda
Kanpur, Nov. 22 -- In a breakthrough that closes one of the oldest pending murder manhunts in the city, the police have arrested a 70-year-old man who had been absconding for four decades in a 1982 murder case.
The accused, Prem Prakash alias Pappu, was 30 when he and his associates allegedly murdered a man and were subsequently arrested.
After spending two years in jail, he secured bail, but stopped appearing before the court in 1985.
A non-bailable warrant was issued, and since then he had disappeared without a trace.
DCP East Satyajit Gupta said that despite the absence of any leads over the years, the ACP Kotwali and Pheelkhana police began a fresh probe by constituting a special team.
Investigators finally traced Prakash to Gonda, where he had been living under the assumed identity of Prem Kumar.
Police said the accused had severed all links with his native locality-Bengali Mohal in Kanpur-and blended into life in Gonda to evade arrest.
The police commissionerate has announced a reward of Rs 25,000 for the team that executed the arrest....
