Lioness dies at Gorakhpur zoo; IVRI team to probe cause
GORAKHPUR, May 8 -- A young lioness housed at the Shaheed Ashfaq Ullah Khan Zoological Park, in Gorakhpur, died early on Wednesday morning, raising concerns among zoo officials. The lioness, Shakti, had been rescued in May, last year, after being found wounded near a railway track.
According to Dr Yogesh Kumar Singh, in-charge of Gorakhpur Zoo and veterinary officer, the two-year-old lioness had sustained severe injuries to her lower back and was undergoing treatment at the zoo. Although she had shown signs of recovery, her health suddenly deteriorated on Tuesday, and despite emergency care, she passed away the next morning.
"She was under constant observation," said Dr Singh. "Dr RK Shukla and Dr Utkarsh from Lucknow were also involved in her treatment. Unfortunately, the ailment progressed rapidly, and we did not have enough time to fully diagnose it."
A post-mortem examination was conducted by a team from the Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI) to determine the exact cause of death.
This incident marks the third wildlife fatality at Gorakhpur Zoo in recent months. htc...
