Leopard suspected of killing man captured in Haldwani forest range
Rudrapur, May 12 -- A male leopard was rescued after being tranquilised in the Fatehpur forest range of Haldwani on Monday morning and shifted to the Ranibagh rescue centre, forest officials said.
Forest personnel had been trying to capture the leopard for nearly a week after it was suspected to be involved in a n attack that killed a 32-year-old resident of a nearby village in April. "Our veterinary staff rescued the leopard after tranquilising him. We had been keeping a close watch and our camera traps were capturing his images. Finally, it was caught on Monday," said Pradeep Asgola, ranger, Fatehpur forest range.
Kamal Bisht, 32, a resident of Bhaduni village, had lost his life in a big cat attack in the Fatehpur forest range on April 24.
Following the incident, villagers staged a proteat and demanded action against the animal. Since then, forest personnel had been trying to capture the leopard believed to be responsible for the attack, said officials aware of the matter.
The forest department had installed 32 camera traps and set up five cages to catch the leopard. A team of veterinary staff was also deployed in the area as part of the operation, added the officials cited above,
"The leopard was tranquilised at around 1.30 am on Monday. The big cat is around 11 years old. It appears to be responsible for the man-animal conflict as our camera traps captured its image several times," said Asgola....
