LAKHIMPUR KHERI, Oct. 9 -- An eight-year-old girl, Anaya, was allegedly killed in a leopard attack late Tuesday evening in Khambharkheda village under the Shardanagar forest range of south Kheri division. This was the second human casualty in the area within 24 hours. Divisional forest officer (South Kheri) Sanjay Biswal confirmed the death and said that patrolling and combing operations had been intensified. "Cages have been set up at key locations, and drones are being used to trace the leopard among dense sugarcane fields," he said. According to reports, Anaya was playing near her hutment when the leopard, hiding in nearby fields, pounced on her and dragged her to a sugarcane field nearly a kilometre away. Hearing her cries, villagers armed with sticks and clubs rushed to the spot and chased the animal, which left the severely injured girl and escaped into the darkness. The child was taken to the hospital but succumbed to her injuries. On Monday, a man, Munna Lal, from Lokaipurwa village, was killed by a leopard in the Dhaurahra range of the Dudhwa buffer zone.
