leopard killed in road accident,case registered
Haldwani, Jan. 8 -- A female leopard was fatally hit by an unidentified vehicle on Tuesday night at Lalkuan in Nainital district, forest officials said.
Terai Central forest division divisional forest officer (DFO) Umesh Chandra Tiwari said a case has been registered against the unidentified driver under relevant sections of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, and an investigation is under way.
After receiving information from local residents, a forest department team rushed to the spot, took possession of the carcass, and sent it for a postmortem examination. DFO Tiwari said locals informed the department that the big cat was hit near the Indian Oil Corporation crossing in Lalkuan late Tuesday night. "The incident occurred when the leopard was crossing the road. An unidentified vehicle struck the animal and fled the spot," Tiwari said.
He added that on reaching the site, the forest team found the animal to be a female leopard, about two years old.
The carcass was subsequently sent for postmortem to determine the exact cause of death.This was the first leopard road fatality of the year in the district, but the second big cat death in two days....
