Leopard found dead in Katarniaghat forest
BAHRAICH, July 13 -- A leopard was found dead in the Katarniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary on Saturday, officials said. Even as the reasons that led to its death were unclear, some suspected that territorial conflict among wild animals in the protected forest zone might have a role to play.
According to forest officials, the carcass was discovered around 200 meters from Azamgarhpurwa village in the Nishangarha Range of the sanctuary. Villagers spotted the lifeless leopard early in the morning and promptly alerted the forest department. Range forest officer SK Srivastava and forester Munish Kumar, along with Adarsh Kumar and Sanjay Singh from Wildlife Trust of India and Mansoor Ahmed from World Wide Fund, reached the site and conducted a thorough examination. All body parts of the leopard were found intact, ruling out poaching. However, footprints of a larger wild animal were found near the site, indicating a possible conflict.
According to Dr Deepak Verma, the veterinary officer who conducted the autopsy, the adult female leopard died due to a deep head injury and multiple puncture wounds consistent with an intense fight with a bigger leopard....
