GORAKHPUR, July 30 -- Panic gripped Mohanpur locality near Padri Bazar under Shahpur police limits early Tuesday after a leopard strayed into a residential area and attacked a woman. The victim, Geeta Yadav, was picking flowers for her morning puja around 4 a.m. when the leopard mauled her, inflicting deep bite wounds on her cheek. She is undergoing treatment at the district hospital. Initially, residents believed a stray dog was behind the attack. However, CCTV footage from a nearby house confirmed the presence of a leopard, prompting immediate alerts to police and forest department officials. District Forest Officer Vikas Yadav said two cages had been placed at different spots and rescue teams equipped with tranquiliser guns were combing the area. "Residents have been advised to stay indoors," he added. The leopard has yet to be traced. Residents, especially in Yadav Tola, remain anxious, with many arming themselves with iron rods and sticks. Nearby schools have been put on alert, and some parents have kept their children at home. Authorities believe the leopard may have wandered in from nearby sugarcane fields or forested areas. "We have lost our peace of mind. The children are terrified, and no one can sleep at night," said Geeta Yadav, urging the administration to act swiftly.htc...
