Lecture on Emergency organised
Lucknow, June 27 -- Arjun Prasad Memorial Lecture -'50 years of Emergency and today's authoritarian times' was held at UP Press Club on Thursday. It was organised by Communist Party of India (Marxist), presided over by state secretary of Progressive Writers Association Nalin Ranjan Singh and conducted by Praveen Singh. Former head of political science department of Lucknow University, prof Ramesh Dixit said that Emergency is remembered as a black chapter of democracy in India. "Emergency was the time when the students' movement was held under the leadership of Jayaprakash Narayan, which later had spread across the country and it was the time of discontent over the dictatorial decisions of the then PM Indira Gandhi.
"Today's ruling party remembers the Emergency as a dark chapter of democracy and the day of murder of the Constitution and attacks then government, but these were the same people who, after being imprisoned, wrote apologies to the then government," said Dixit.
Among those present during the programme were former vice-chancellor of LU prof Roop Rekha Verma, state secretary CPM Arvind Raj Swaroop, district secretary CPM Madhu Garg, senior critic Virendra Yadav and former LU professor Nadeem Hasnain....
