LUCKNOW, May 17 -- The Lucknow Development Authority (LDA) recently constituted a four-member committee to investigate alleged violations of lease terms by the Motilal Memorial Society, days after the latter submitted its reply to the notice issued for commercial use of Nazul land in Charbagh. Confirming it, LDA Nazul officer Prabhakar Singh on Friday said the committee will examine the Motilal Memorial Society's response and survey the site. "The report of the probe is expected within a month, based on which further action will be taken," he added. Rajesh Singh, general secretary, Motilal Memorial Society, said the society submitted its reply well within the 15-day deadline. "We have responded to the LDA's notice before the stipulated time," he said. The LDA, in its notice dated April 16, accused the society of violating lease conditions by allowing profit-making ventures on the premises. They included a vehicle showroom and a service centre, a liquor shop and stalls selling clothes among others. Officials said these activities violate the perpetual lease granted on January 3, 1940, which permits only non-profit, educational and cultural uses as per the society's memorandum of association. While the land also houses permitted institutions like the Children's Museum, Ravindralaya, Bal Vidya Mandir School, Harbilas Bhawan and a homeopathic hospital, the presence of commercial entities has drawn scrutiny, previously reported by HT on April 20, 2025. "The lease strictly bars commercial operations. The reported establishments are in clear violation," said an LDA official. In the notice, the LDA warned that failure to provide a satisfactory reply may lead to cancellation of the lease and re-entry proceedings....
