Lawyers halt registry work, FIR ordered after assault on staff
PRAYAGRAJ, April 25 -- Work at both registry offices in Prayagraj came to a standstill on Friday morning after a group of lawyers staged a protest, forcibly stopping proceedings and allegedly assaulting registry office employees. The disruption created chaos inside the offices, prompting authorities to suspend all registry operations for several hours.
Following complaints by several lawyers, district magistrate Manish Kumar Verma sought a report from assistant inspector general (AIG) of stamps Rakesh Chandra and ordered the immediate reopening of the offices.
Registry work later resumed in both locations. Notably, registry operations had also remained suspended on Thursday due to similar protests by lawyers. Officials said the unrest stemmed from an ongoing dispute between two rival factions of lawyers.
AIG Rakesh Chandra said the DM has ordered an inquiry into the incident and directed that an FIR be lodged against those involved in physically assaulting employees. Instructions have also been issued for installing CCTV cameras and strengthening security arrangements to prevent such incidents in the future.
