Haridwar, Nov. 22 -- Senior seers of the Akhil Bharatiya Udasin Sampraday Sangat on Friday expressed concern that Uttar Pradesh-based land mafia, allegedly eyeing more than 400 bighas of Akhada land spread across several states, may have played a role in the mysterious disappearance of seer Mohan Das seven years ago. Addressing a press briefing in Haridwar, the seers said the Akhada had long been receiving threats from individuals attempting to take control of ashram properties worth crores. He alleged that this sustained pressure could be linked to the disappearance of Mahant Mohan Das in 2017, while he was travelling from Haridwar to Mumbai. "We had approached the high court, which on October 3 ordered a CBI probe into the disappearance of Mahant Mohan Das," Mahant Dharmendra Das said. He said, "Even today, we continue to receive threats from mafia elements eyeing Akhada property. We thank the Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand governments for providing us security. We will fully cooperate with the CBI and present all facts and threat perceptions during the investigation." Mahant Mohan Das, associated with Shri Panchayati Akhada Bada Udasin, went missing on September 16, 2017, after boarding the Lokmanya Tilak Express from Haridwar railway station for Mumbai. During the initial police investigation, he was reportedly last seen at Meerut railway station on the night of September 16-17, after which no trace of him was found. An FIR under section 365 (kidnapping) of IPC was registered at Kankhal police station on September 17, 2017. An Akhada office bearer, requesting anonymity, said several seers believe Mohan Das's disappearance may also be linked to the September 12, 2017 announcement in Prayagraj where the Akhil Bharatiya Akhada Parishad released a list of 14 fake self-styled godmen. Mohan Das had reportedly played a key role in the process, the seer said. Investigators had earlier traced a withdrawal of Rs.40,000 from an ATM in Haridwar by the seer shortly before he boarded the train, raising another angle-whether someone had seen him carrying the money and followed him with the intention of robbery. With the CBI now set to take over the case, the Udasin Sampraday Sangat said it hoped the truth behind the disappearance will finally come to light....
