land-for-jobs case: HC reserves judgment on deferring trial
New Delhi, July 25 -- The Delhi high court on Thursday reserved verdict in Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad's application seeking deferment on argument on charge in a case registered by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) with regards to the land-for-jobs scam.
Justice Ravinder Dudeja reserved the verdict after Lalu's lawyer Kapil Sibal and Maninder Singh urged the court to defer the argument on charge and hear the same pursuant to the high court hearing his plea to quash the CBI case.
The counsel asserted that the trial court, on July 12, had directed for hearing and concluding the argument on charge on his behalf and seven other accused from July 26 to August 2 while his plea to quash the CBI case was listed before the high court on August 12.
Singh argued that if the trial court concluded his arguments on charge in the meantime, his quashing petition would become infructuous.
He further submitted that the conclusion of argument on charge before hearing the quashing petition would be in the teeth of the Supreme Court's July 18 order for expeditious hearing of the quashing petition.
The federal agency, represented by public prosecutor DP Singh, opposed the deferment.
Considering the contention, justice Dudeja said, "Allow me to go through the record first and then I will pass the order."...
