Lakshagriha set for uplift under Mahabharat Circuit Project
Meerut, Sept. 19 -- The Uttar Pradesh Tourism Department is taking an initiative to develop Lakshagriha, a historic site in Baghpat district linked to the Mahabharat, into a religious and heritage tourism destination.
With a sanctioned budget of Rs.1 crore under the Mahabharat Circuit, the project aims to modernise the site while preserving its cultural significance, positioning Baghpat as a key stop on India's tourism map.
Located in Baranava village near the Hindon and Krishna rivers, Lakshagriha is famously known as the palace of lac constructed by the Kauravas in their failed attempt to kill the Pandavas by fire, a pivotal episode in the Mahabharata.
The site, just 35 km from Baghpat town and accessible via the Delhi-Meerut highway, features remnants protected by the Archaeological Survey of India, including a mound with steps that locals associate with the epic's dramatic events. The development plan includes modern amenities such as beautification, advanced lighting, sanitation facilities, drinking water, rest areas, and visitor information centres.
These upgrades aim to enhance accessibility and appeal for pilgrims, history enthusiasts, and tourists. "Lakshagriha is one of the most significant episodes in the Mahabharat, symbolising both conspiracy and resilience," said tourism and culture minister Jaiveer Singh.
"By developing this site, we are not only preserving a cultural treasure but also opening new avenues for tourism and local prosperity. Lakshagriha's revival will strengthen Baghpat's place in India's religious and cultural tourism."Baghpat is rapidly gaining prominence as a tourism hub in western Uttar Pradesh, having welcomed nearly 17 lakh visitors in 2024. Authorities anticipate this number could surpass 20 lakh in 2025, driven by the district's proximity to Delhi and Meerut and its rich cultural offerings. Alongside Lakshagriha, attractions like the Pura Mahadev Temple and Trilok Teerth Dham of the Jain tradition make Baghpat a multi-faith destination, appealing to diverse visitors.Principal secretary, tourism and & culture, Mukesh Kumar Meshram, emphasized the broader vision behind the project. "Lakshagriha is not just a historical site-it is a living link to India's epic tradition," he said.
"By integrating modern facilities while retaining its sanctity, we are ensuring that visitors, whether pilgrims or history lovers, leave with a deeper sense of connection to our heritage."The Lakshagriha project is part of Uttar Pradesh's larger strategy to transform its religious and cultural landmarks into world-class tourism experiences. The site's development, officials said, is expected to draw scholars, archaeologists, and devotees alike, offering a tangible connection to one of India's most enduring epics while boosting local economies through increased tourism.HTC...
