LUCKNOW, Aug. 30 -- Batters Nishant Kushwaha and Akshdeep Nath plated responsible innings as Gorakhpur Lions eased to a seven-wicket win over defending champions Meerut Mavericks in the 24th match of the UPT20 League, at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium here on Friday. Chasing what looked like a tricky target of 191, the Lions never looked to be in any kind of trouble and reached the total in the final over. Kushwaha led the charge with a superb 92 that included 12 fours and three sixes and he had ample support from captain Nath with the duo adding 104 for the second wicket. After a watchful first three overs, the Gorakhpur Lions openers began to work their way in their chase from the fourth over. It was here that Vijay Kumar was taken to the cleaners with Bhaskar Bhardwaj hitting him for fours over mid-wicket and to third-man before Kushwaha flicked a ball drifting on to his pads for a six. This was the trigger that the Lions batters needed as they went on to collect a further 11 runs from the fifth over and finished the Powerplay at 57 without loss. Meerut have typically relied on the leg-spin of Zeeshan Ansari to pick up wickets during the middle overs but he proved to be ineffective on Friday as he conceded 13 from his first two overs and even as Bhardwaj got out to a Kartik Tyagi slower ball at the other end, he was unable to put any pressure on the new batter. That new batter was captain Nath and while he wasn't at his fluent best from the very start he played his support role to perfection. Because, at the other end, he had a batter who was refusing to let up. Kushwaha pulled Yash Garg away to get to his half-century off just 32 balls. In the second match of the day, Noida Superkings crushed Kanpur Superstars by seven wickets....
