Krishna stars in UP's big win in Vijay Merchant Trophy
LUCKNOW, Dec. 11 -- A five-wicket haul by young spinner Krishna Yadav guided former champions Uttar Pradesh crush Tripura by 10 wickets to score their first win that too with a bonus point in their three-day Elite Group A encounter of the Under-16 Vijay Merchant Trophy at Shimoga on Wednesday.
Yadav bagged 5/43, whereas Aryan Tyagi and Prithviraj Singh shared four wickets between them to get Tripura out for 237 while following on in their second innings on the final day of the match on Wednesday. Thereafter, Uttar Pradesh openers Hitesh Kumar (10) and Anay Awasthi (4) scored the required 14 runs in 1.1 overs without being separated.
It was a fine show by Uttar Pradesh bowlers as they never allowed Tripura batters to free their arms after they resumed at the overnight score of 2/84. Opener Rajdeep Debnath struck 44 in 67 balls with the help of eight fours, but Somdev Shil stood tall with 193-ball 80, which contained 14 hits to the fence.
In their first innings, Uttar Pradesh scored 331 before bundling out Tripura for 107 in the first innings. Now, Uttar Pradesh with seven points from the first match play against Chandigarh in their second match from December 12 to 14 at KSCA 2 at Shimoga.
A stellar performance by bowlers like Ravi Saini, Aayan Akram and K Krishna put former champions Uttar Pradesh on the verge of winning against hosts Assam in their Elite Group D encounter of the Cooch Behar Trophy, at the Mangaldai Sports Association Stadium at Mangaldai on Wednesday.
Saini took 3/29, Akram bagged 3/75 and Krishna claimed 2/35 as Uttar Pradesh got Assam out for 219 in their second innings on the penultimate day of their four-day tie on Wednesday. In reply to Assam's first innings total of 138, Uttar Pradesh scored 259.
And in the second innings while needing just 99 to win, Uttar Pradesh were 1/60 at the close of stumps on Wednesday and they will now be needing just 39 runs to script their third win of the season when the final day game begins on Thursday.
Resuming at the overnight score of 2/80, Assam found the going tough with Saini, Akram and Krishna along with Dakshh Chandel and Bhavi Sharma as hosts kept losing wickets on regular intervals before being shot out in 92.2 overs.
Opener Barunjoti Malakar and concussion substitute Darmiyan Rasul struck half-centuries, but failed to help the side post a challenging total for Uttar Pradesh. Malakar made 52 in 85 balls with the help of eight hits to the fence, whereas Rasul struck 65 in 181 balls with the help of seven boundaries and a six.
Full marks to Akram, who finished with eight wickets in the match, whereas Krishna walked away with five wickets in the match. In reply, Uttar Pradesh lost the only wicket on opener Anmol Noushran, who made 55-ball 25 with the help of two hits to the fence before being bowled by Ranjan Bikash das....
