KIYG: After missing podium twice, UP cagers grab gold
LUCKNOW, May 16 -- It's a dream come true for the spirited Uttar Pradesh boys and they let it show with an impromptu dance session right on the floor of the Patliputra Sports Complex Indoor Stadium on Thursday afternoon.
After missing knockout berths in two consecutive years, they won the basketball title at the Khelo India Youth Games (KIYG) in Panta, on Thursday, brushing aside Rajasthan 68-57 in a thrilling final. Karnataka won the girls team title, defeating Haryana.
Indeed, the enormity of winning their maiden basketball title at the KIYG was big for the Jatin Hudda-led UP boys. The low-scoring title clash was more of an attritional contest, with the teams seemingly evenly-matched. Uttar Pradesh's ability to find ways to score at critical moments helped it beat Rajasthan's challenge.
The UP boys did well to rally around one another, finding heroes in Sanjay Mahakumbh (15 pts), Anuj Divakar (19 pts) and Jatin (17 pts), who scored at key moments. Mahakumbh stole the ball and converted at the very end of the third quarter to leave Rajasthan to consider that lapse which allowed UP to lead 47-44. In the final quarter, UP's twin spearheads found a three-pointer each to make it tough for Rajasthan to catch up. Besides, Rajasthan ended up rueing the tendency of its players to commit fouls. Letting Uttar Pradesh score off free throws also made a big difference and impacted the outcome of the game. "For the last two editions, we were unable to make it to the knockout, but this time the boys came up with superb performances, especially against Delhi in the league phase when we won the match by just two points," teams' chief coach Manish Srivastava told Hindustan Times over the phone on Thursday.
Uttar Pradesh didn't lose a single match till the final as they defeated Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Delhi and Tamil Nadu in the semi-final. "We had a six-day training session in Ghaziabad as UPBA chief wanted this, and I am happy that our plans worked out."
For sure, winning will help UP do well in the future domestic events as we will be facing the same lot of opposition there too," said Srivastava, who hails from Gorakhpur. "In fact, all the boys were charged up from the very first match here in Patna and didn't make any serious mistakes, which helped us dominate the proceedings till the end," the coach said.
However, Uttar Pradesh finished seventh in medals tally at the end of the KIYU on Thursday with 52 medals, including 14 gold, 20 silver and 18 bronzes....
