KGMU launchesits robotic surgery facility
LUCKNOW, May 10 -- King George's Medical University (KGMU), which conducts an average of 200 surgeries daily, launched its robotic surgery facility on Friday with three successful procedures-one gall bladder, one hernia surgeries by the Department of Surgery and one orchiopexy (to fix undescended testicles) by the Urology Department.
"We operated on a female patient for gall bladder removal (robotic cholecystectomy). Simple cases were selected initially to help surgeons acclimatise with the robotic system," said Prof Abhinav Arun Sonkar, Head of General Surgery, who performed one of the surgeries. The surgery for hernia was conducted by Prof HS Pahwa of the department of general surgery.
Prof Vishwajeet Singh, head of Urology, said, "The orchiopexy was our department's first robotic surgery. More departments will adopt this technology, and a surgery roster will be created."
Vice-chancellor professor Sonia Nityanand, who inaugurated the robotic surgery centre, said the first 200 robotic surgeries would be free of charge....
