KGMU docs save man from post-surgery complication
Lucknow, Dec. 25 -- Doctors at King George's Medical University (KGMU) have successfully saved the life of a 25-year-old man who developed an exceptionally rare and potentially fatal complication following gallbladder surgery at another hospital-a ruptured cystic artery stump pseudoaneurysm, causing massive internal bleeding and hemorrhagic shock, the university said in a press release.
The patient, brought to KGMU on November 8 with severe abdominal pain, fever, and persistent vomiting, was critically ill. On arrival, he was in shock with a dangerously low hemoglobin of 5.2 g/dL. Despite immediate resuscitation and blood transfusions, his condition worsened, prompting an emergency exploratory laparotomy on November 15. Surgeons found nearly one litre of blood and clots in the abdominal cavity.
Persistent bleeding led to a CT angiography, which revealed the ruptured pseudoaneurysm. Within hours, the Interventional Radiology team, led by Prof Manoj Kumar, performed a super-selective coil embolisation, sealing the artery while preserving liver blood flow.
