Key amendment opens door for V-C reappointment at AU
PRAYAGRAJ, Dec. 12 -- The path is now clear for the reappointment of a vice-chancellor (VC) at Allahabad University (AU) following a key amendment to Section 4 of Statute 2 of the University of Allahabad Act, 2005. The amendment now allows a VC to be considered for a second term, a provision that was previously unavailable.
The gazette notification regarding the amendment was issued on November 27 by the university's r egistrar, Prof Ashish Khare, detailing changes to Statute 2, Section 4 of the Act.
Prof Jaya Kapoor, PRO of AU, confirmed the update, stating, "The University has received confirmation of the amendment to Statute 2 (4), which now reads as follows: The Vice-Chancellor shall hold office for a term of five years from the date on which he/she enters upon his/her office or until he/she attains the age of seventy years, whichever is earlier, and shall be eligible for re-appointment."
The amendment comes at a crucial time, as the tenure of the current vice-chancellor, Prof Sangita Srivastava, officially ended on November 29. On the orders of the President of India, who serves as the visitor of the university, her term has been extended until further notice. The Union education ministry recently sent formal communication to the university regarding this extension.
The notification states: "In exercise of the powers vested in it under Section 28(2) of the University of Allahabad Act, 2005, the Executive Council of the University, in its 14th meeting held on April 17, 2010, amended Clause 4 of Statute 2 to extend the age of superannuation of the Vice-Chancellor from 65 to 70 years and make them eligible for re-appointment. This has the approval of the Hon'ble President of India in his capacity as Visitor, as conveyed by the letter no. 32-09/2014-Desk (U) dated February 6, 2015, from the Ministry of Human Resource Development."
Experts believe the move will enhance administrative stability at AU and ensure continuity in academic and administrative functions. The amendment is expected to strengthen governance and allow experienced leadership to guide the university in the coming years....
