Kenyan undergoes successful spine surgery at KGMU
LUCKNOW, July 6 -- Beldina Morra Nyakundi, 38, from Nairobi, Kenya, underwent a successful minimally invasive endoscopic discectomy, at King George's Medical University (KGMU), Lucknow, earlier in the month.
In a release, the medical university explained that Nyakundi had been suffering from chronic lower back pain due to an L5-S1 inter-vertebral disc herniation, a condition that can cause debilitating pain, numbness, and difficulty in mobility. After consulting various specialists in Kenya, she opted to travel to India, seeking advanced care at affordable cost. The procedure was performed at a fraction of the cost she would typically incur in her home country. The typical price of an endoscopic spine procedure in Kenya ranges anywhere from Rs 8-10 lakh, whereas it costs around Rs 20,000-30,000 at the KGMU.
The procedure was carried out by senior consultant, Prof Kshitij Srivastava, department of neurosurgery, KGMU, with Dr Vishnu Vardhan and Dr Sahil Garg. The anaesthesia support was led by head of department of anaesthesia and critical care, Dr Monika Kohli and senior consultants Dr Ahsan Siddiqui and Dr Brijesh Pratap Singh, ensuring a safe and smooth operation....
