Kedarnath yatra suspended after landslide; 1,619 pilgrims rescued
Mussoorie, Aug. 1 -- Char Dham Yatra to Kedarnath remained suspended for the second consecutive day on Thursday following a massive landslide that blocked the Sonprayag-Gaurikund route, officials said, adding that security and rescue personnel rescued more than 1,600 pilgrims through an alternative route on Thursday.
The yatra was halted on Wednesday, after a landslide was triggered by heavy rainfall on Tuesday night about 1.5 km from Gaurikund toward Sonprayag, completely blocking the key road that connects pilgrims returning from the Kedarnath shrine to lower altitudes.
According to an official, a temporary alternative route was created by the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and local police to facilitate the return of pilgrims from Kedarnath Dham.
Ashish Dimri, sub-inspector and head of the SDRF rescue operation, said that approximately 1,619 pilgrims were safely escorted till 5 pm on Thursday before operations were paused due to renewed rainfall. "The weather turned unfavourable and made the route slippery, posing risks to the pilgrims. Rescue efforts will resume once conditions improve," he said....
