VARANASI, Oct. 2 -- Kashi is soaked in festive fervour these days. While devotees are thronging Durga puja pandals to celebrate Navratri, the effigies of Ravan are all ready to be burnt at different locations on Vijayadashmi on Thursday. At BLW ground, the tallest in the city, a 70-foot tall Ravan effigy will be burnt to mark Dussehra celebration. A local Rajkumar Das says, participating in Dussehra celebration in past years at BLW has been an amazing experience. People wait for this celebration due to its exclusiveness in terms of effigies of Ravana and Kumbhakarn. Besides, theme-based pandals are the centre of attraction among the people. There are over 511 pandals in Kashi. A pandal in Jaitpura has been decorated with an AI theme, and devotees performed dhunuchi dance in Bengali Tola. Sanatan Dharma Inter College and Hathua Market pandals are also drawing a huge number of devotees. A replica of Jagannath Temple has been set up at Shivpur Mini Stadium. Moreover, 501 girls, symbolizing the Goddess, were worshipped by washing their feet at the Reserve Police Lines, Varanasi on Tuesday. Prasad, sweets, and gifts were also given to the girls. Minister of State Dr Dayashankar Mishra Dayalu, District Panchayat President Poonam Maurya, MLC Dharmendra Singh, Commissioner of police Mohit Agarwal, and District Magistrate Satyendra Kumar performed Kanya Pujan. Six female sub-inspectors and one female constable were honoured with cash prizes and certificates for their outstanding, courageous, and commendable work while on duty. Additional commissioner of police (law and order) Shivhari Meena, additional commissioner of police (crime) Rajesh Kumar Singh, and chief development officer Himanshu Nagpal were present at the event.
