Kashi hosts mega cycling event, pvt security guards feted
VARANASI, Dec. 8 -- The 52nd edition of Fit India Sundays on Cycle took place on Sunday at over 10,000 locations across the country, with the main event held in the culturally vibrant city of Varanasi. This edition of Fit India Sundays on Cycle spotlighted private security guards as the special focus group, carrying forward the initiative's mission to involve diverse professi- onal communities across the nation.
Spearheaded by union minister for youth affairs and sports, Dr Mansukh Mandaviya, the movement is entering its first anniversary edition, scheduled on December 21 in Puducherry.
"In just one year, the Fit India Sundays on Cycle initiative is being organised at more than 10,000 locations connecting over 1 lakh people every week. From athletes and artists to actors and citizens, everyone has joined this movement," the minister said.
"Today's mega event at Banaras Hindu University (BHU) is also a celebration of the proud moment when Bharat secured the hosting rights for the 2030 Commonwealth Games. For the first time, eminent figures from the world of music and culture participated in the Varanasi event. Private security guards-who work tirelessly to keep society safe-also joined as special partners, alongside our athletes who contribute each day to strengthening our sporting culture," Dr Mandaviya added.
A total of 1,000 people participated in cycling, and other activities including zumba, yoga, and rope skipping.
The event saw the participation of several cultural icons, including Daya Shankar Mishra, Minister of State for Ayush, Food Security & Drug Administration, Government of Uttar Pradesh; Pandit Sajan Mishra, Padma Bhushan awardee and renowned vocalist of the Banaras Gharana; Sanju Sahai, noted musician and tabla artist of the Banaras Gharana; Vishambhar Nath Mishra, Mahant of the Sankat Mo`chan Temple; and Shashi Bhushan Tripathi (Guddu Maharaj), Pradhan Archak of the Kashi Vishwanath Temple. They were joined by top Indian athletes such as boxer Amit Panghal, weightlifter Sunil Singh, freestyle wrestler Pooja Sihag, and others.
Daya Shankar Mishra praised the initiative, saying, "I thank Prime Minister Narendra Modi for launching the visionary Fit India Movement, which has turned fitness into a national movement. I also thank Union Sports Minister Dr Mansukh Mandaviya for starting today's SOC and strengthening the campaign through inclusive efforts. Today's event reflects the spirit of a healthy and empowered New India."
Padma Bhushan Sajan Mishra said hosting CWG 2030 is a proud moment and emphasised fitness, echoing PM Modi's focus on staying healthy.
