VARANASI, Sept. 24 -- After a gap of 72 days, the operation of boats resumed in Ganga in Kashi on Tuesday. The restrictions were imposed due to floods and the rising water levels in the Ganga. The restrictions were lifted following protest by the boatmen at Dashashwamedh Ghat on Tuesday as the administration had further extended the dates of boats' operation till September 25. After the demonstration, additional deputy commissioner of police, Kashi Zone, Sarvanan T reached the spot and spoke to the boatmen. He asked the boatment to follow the safety guidelines and pay special attention to the security of the passengers. Boatmen agreed to that. Thereafter, they were asked to resume operation of the boats. Sarvanan said, "After holding a meeting with the boatmen, the over two-month long restriction on the boat plying has been removed with immediate effect. The boatmen have been requested to ensure that all the passengers wear life jackets as they board the boats."
