Kartik, Shubham keep UP hopes alive in Nayudu Trophy
LUCKNOW, Oct. 29 -- Left-arm spinners Kartik Yadav and Shubham Mishra continued to dazzle with their fine show even on Tuesday, helping former champions and hosts Uttar Pradesh stay in hunt for their second outright win of the season in their four-day Elite Group D encounter of the Under-23 Col CK Nayudu Trophy against visitors Karnataka at Meerut.
Both Yadav and Mishra, who shared four and three wickets, respectively in Karnataka's first innings, came up with yet another brilliance on the slow turf of the Victoria Park Ground on Tuesday, sharing eight wickets between them to bowl out Karnataka for 248 in 76.1 overs in their second innings. Karnataka scored 235 runs in the first innings and got Uttar Pradesh out for 215, managing a 20-run first innings lead.
Uttar Pradesh, who needed 269 runs to extract an outright win, were 92/3 at the end of penultimate day in 30 overs with Aadarsh Singh and Shubham Mishra on the crease in their second innings. Adarsh was batting at 38 in 85 balls with the help of two boundaries and a six, whereas Mishra was at two at close of stumps. Now, on the final day of the match on Wednesday, Uttar Pradesh will need 177 runs to win in 90 overs at a strike rate of less than two runs per over.
It was pacer Vijay Kumar, who hurled the first blow on visitors on Day 3 after Karnataka resumed at the overnight score of 50/2, forcing skipper Aneeshwar Gautam for a straight catch to Mishra (42, 58b, 6x4, 1x6). And thereafter, the duo of Yadav and Mishra started sending Karnataka batters one-by-one to the pavilion on regular intervals.
Whereas Yadav got the wicket of Karthikeya KP (53, 125b, 7x4) caught by Rituraj Sharma, Mishra on the other end castled Harshil Dharmani (30, 49b, 5x4). Then it came the turns of Dhruv Prabhakar (25, 77, 3x4), Hardik Raj (33, 41b, 5x4, 1x6) and Shashi Kumar K (1) falling prey to Yadav, pacer Naman Tiwari and Mishra took the wickets of Samit Dravid (4) and Sanjay Ashwin C (24, 29b, 4x4).
Later, Uttar Pradesh had a shaky start in their second innings as both opener Mohd Aashiyan and swastik Chikara (1) departed in quick succession with the scoreboard reading just seven in 1.2 overs. Aashiyan was caught by Kartikeya KP off Dhanush Gowda R after scoring just six, Chikara (1) was trapped LBW in front of the wicket.
Fellow opener Adarsh Singh and Rituraj Sharma then took the score to 87, stitching together 80 runs for the third wicket before Sharma being caught by Dhanush off Samit Dravid. He scored 78-ball 37 with the help of four boundaries and two sixes.
Given the conditions, the winning target isn't that tough for Uttar Pradesh, especially when playing on the home turf, but their remaining seven batters will require to bat patiently when the final day's game begins on Wednesday....
