Kanpur railway engineer wins National Energy Award
Kanpur, Dec. 16 -- Rahul Tripathi, senior divisional electrical engineer at the Electric Loco Shed in Kanpur, has received the National Energy Conservation Award 2025 for innovation in the transport sector. The award was presented at Vigyan Bhawan on Sunday. President Droupadi Murmu gave the award in the presence of union power minister Manohar Lal Khattar, according to North Central Railway. The award recognises an initiative developed through collaboration between the Railways and IIT Kanpur. The project has helped the Railways save about Rs 3,700 crore in maintenance and electricity costs within 15 months. The study found that harmonic filters used in older GTO-based engines were no longer needed in modern IGBT-based locomotives. These filters were increasing power use and causing engine failures.
