K'taka HC quashes PhonePe plea in online betting case
New Delhi, May 15 -- India temporarily blocked several foreign media accounts on X amid a crackdown on what officials described as "anti-India content" following the country's Operation Sindoor against Pakistani targets.
The X accounts of Turkish broadcaster TRT World and Chinese state-run tabloid Global Times were blocked for several hours before being restored Tuesday evening. However, the account of China's official Xinhua news agency remains blocked.
The blocking comes amid heightened acrimony between those backing India and its regional rivals, Pakistan and China, including political leaders and state-run media organisations.
Two government officials provided different explanations for the blocks. One official, speaking on condition of anonymity, suggested certain posts by these organisations drew government scrutiny but neither confirmed nor denied whether fresh blocking orders were issued.
A second official told Hindustan Times that the accounts were blocked because they targeted Indian political leaders, adding that the removal of accounts resulted from coordination between multiple ministries, including external affairs.

The diplomatic context includes tensions with Turkey and China, both of which supported Pakistan during the conflict.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed solidarity with Pakistan, prompting calls on Indian social media for sanctions against Turkey.
The Indian embassy in Beijing publicly criticised Global Times on May 7, accusing it of spreading disinformation about Operation Sindoor for claiming that Pakistani combat jets had downed Indian aircraft.
"We would recommend you verify your facts and cross-examine your sources before pushing out this kind of disinformation," the embassy wrote in a statement on X.
The first official quoted above warned that more accounts may be added to the block list, including "less popular accounts sharing anti-India content."
Several Indian independent media outlets and journalists remain blocked, including Maktoob Media, The Kashmiriyat, Free Press Kashmir, and prominent journalists Anuradha Bhasin and Muzamil Jaleel....
