PRAYAGRAJ, July 12 -- A junior assistant posted in the office of deputy commissioner, Excise Department in Prayagraj was caught red-handed by a team of anti-corruption department here on Friday. The accused had demanded a bribe of Rs 13,000 from a person, who had a contract of country liquor at Chauphatka crossing in 2024-25 and after expiry of his shop license he had approached the office of Excise Commissioner to get his security deposit refunded. A case against the accused junior assistant has been lodged in Cantonment police station. As per reports, complainant Shikhar Kushwaha of Bhavpur under Kareli police station area of Prayagraj had a licensed shop with license no. 29817 located at Chaufatka crossing of the city, operated in 2024-25. The shop was allotted in the name of his mother by the Excise department. Last month he had approached the department seeking refund of his security deposit money. However, for returning the security amount of the country liquor shop, a junior assistant of the department, Ram Kumar Sonkar, resident of village Gausganj Musanagar in Kanpur Dehat district demanded a bribe of Rs 13000. Irked over the same, Kushwaha had tendered a written complaint against the junior assistant of Excise department. On Friday, laying a trap based on the complaint, a team of anti-corruption bureau, Prayagraj arrested Ram Kumar Sonkar red-handed while taking a bribe of Rs 13,000 at the Excise Warehouse in front of the complainant and other employees of the department.
