Jodhpur city wall is under threat: Experts
Jodhpur, June 23 -- Experts, expressing concerns over encroachment along Jodhpur's centuries-old City Wall - declared a protected monument - said it is steadily losing its identity due to illegal constructions, and repeated damage by private individuals. Despite its historical significance and earlier restoration efforts, they said, sections of the wall are once again being tampered with-this time near the Ram Pol area, in front of the Puran Haveli Guest House-raising concerns about the administration's lax enforcement.
Dr Mahendra Singh Tanwar, convener of the Jodhpur Chapter of the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH), said, "This wall once marked the boundaries of the old city and protected its key gateways. In 1989, INTACH undertook a detailed study and brought the deteriorating condition of these structures to the notice of the state government, urging them to declare it a protected monument," he said.
After this, the Rajasthan government granted the wall protected status under the Archaeology Department and undertook major restoration work in 2005 with the joint support of INTACH Jodhpur Chapter, Mehrangarh Museum Trust, and state funds.
"Despite earlier action by the archaeology and police departments, certain individuals, including the guest house owner and nearby residents, continue to damage the wall for personal gain," Dr Tanwar added. INTACH warned that without strict and immediate intervention by the administration, the remaining structure of the heritage wall-despite its protected status-could be lost forever....
