VARANASI, Nov. 11 -- A joint police team, including the SOG and Surveillance units, arrested a thief and recovered 131 grams of gold and 2.9 kilograms of silver jewellery worth about Rs 24 lakh from his possession, Varanasi police said on Monday. The accused, identified as Safiq Khan, was nabbed from Tonki Road in Dhar district of Madhya Pradesh while allegedly carrying the stolen ornaments for sale. According to police, the arrest came after a complaint was filed by businessman Girish Kumar Soni of Wadrafnagar in Chhattisgarh's Balrampur district. Soni stated that on October 15, 2025, he had travelled to Varanasi for business and boarded a bus from Tengra Mod to Wadrafnagar around 8:25 PM with his relative, Rameshwar Soni, carrying a bag containing 140 grams of gold and three kilograms of silver jewellery. When Soni reached Wadrafnagar the next morning, he discovered that the jewellery was missing. Following the incident, an FIR was lodged under Section 303(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at Robertsganj Police Station in Sonbhadra, Uttar Pradesh. During the investigation, police allegedly found Safiq Khan's involvement in the theft and recovered the stolen jewellery after his arrest....
