LUCKNOW, May 29 -- Jal Shakti minister Swatantra Dev Singh on Wednesday instructed officers to conduct regular monitoring of embankments in flood-prone areas throughout the monsoon season. Singh recently visited several districts for on-the-spot inspections of flood protection projects and collected feedback from the public. In a meeting with senior officials of the irrigation and water resources department, he said, "The engineers, officers and employees should stay in the headquarters to maintain a constant watch on the situation in the flood-prone areas." He instructed that construction work should be completed on schedule with attention to quality. On irrigation, he said farmers should be provided adequate water and officers must ensure water reaches the tail end of the canals. Senior officers were asked to inspect canals and take action against erring officials if any irregularities are found.
