Varanasi, Dec. 13 -- A murder accused lodged in Azamgarh divisional jail escaped from the Azamgarh divisional hospital early on Friday morning, police said. The prisoner has been identified as Uday, also known as "Gujarati". He is originally from Isanagar in Gujarat and had been living in an area under Shahpur police station in Gorakhpur. Uday was jailed on a murder charge and was shifted from Gorakhpur jail to Azamgarh jail on September 6, 2021 for administrative reasons. He had been in Azamgarh jail for the past four years. Police said Uday had been unwell for a long time and required hospital treatment every 15 days. He was admitted again on December 6 for piles and anaemia. On Friday morning, Uday got up saying he needed to use the toilet and then escaped, managing to slip away from the jail guards on duty. The guards searched for him but could not find him, and later informed the jail administration. Following this, police from the city police station began searching for him at different places. Superintendent of Police, Azamgarh, Anil Kumar, said that a case has been registered against the escaped prisoner. Police teams have been deployed to arrest him, and a reward of Rs.25,000 has been announced for information leading to his capture. Several teams are working to find him....
