LUCKNOW, Jan. 14 -- It's almost all over for former champions Uttar Pradesh in the Under-16 Vijay Merchant Trophy as rivals Mumbai on Tuesday stretched their overall lead to 681 runs on the penultimate day of their four-day quarterfinal, at the Lal Bahadur Shastri Stadium in Anand. At the close of stumps on Tuesday, Mumbai were 183/4 in 50 overs in their second innings after managing a huge 498 first innings lead as Uttar Pradesh could score just 135 in their first innings while chasing Mumbai's first innings total of 633. It was a pathetic show by Uttar Pradesh batters after resuming at the overnight score of 10/1 on Tuesday morning as they kept losing wickets on regular intervals before being reduced to 36/4 in 14.5 overs. Arush Gupta remained the highest run getter scoring 54 in 74 balls with the help of 11 hits to the fence. Opener Hitesh Kumar (14), Anay awasthi (13) and Aarav tyagi 9110 were the other batters, who could touch the double figure mark. Young Advait Bhat remained the wrecker-in-chief for Mumbai, bagging 5/36, whereas Vedant Gore and Siddhant shared four wickets between. Kartik Kumar took 1/20. Instead of forcing Uttar Pradesh for a follow-on, Mumbai chose to allow their batters to practice for their next match and they managed 183/4 at 3.66 in 50 overs before the end of third day's play. Skipper Aayush Shete remained ruthless to Uttar Pradesh bowlers, striking 127-ball 96 with the help of 12 fours and a six before being caught by Prithviraj Singh off Anay Awasthi. Fellow opener Rishabh S made 31-ball 24 with the help of four hits to the fence as the two managed 50 runs for the opening wicket. At the close of stumps, Harsh Shailesh Kadam and the first innings centurion Arjun Gadoya were at the crease while adding an unbeaten 34 runs for the fifth wicket. Both kept Uttar Pradesh bowlers at bay. In his 56-ball 36, Kadam struck five boundaries, whereas Gadoya made 16 in 29 balls with the help of two boundaries. Spinner Anay Awasthi took 3/34, whereas Krishna Yadav bagged 1/38 for Uttar Pradesh. It would just be a formality for Mumbai to finish the game after facing mandatory overs as nothing is left for Uttar Pradeesh in the game when the final day's game begins on Wednesday....
