India could play two spinners in edgbaston test: Ten Doeschate
New Delhi, July 2 -- The Indian team's assistant coach Ryan Ten Doeschate on Monday hinted that the team could opt to play two spinners in the second Test against England at Edgbaston, Birmingham that starts on Wednesday.
The tourists, who are 1-0 down in the series, went in with a lone spinner Ravindra Jadeja in the first Test at Leeds. He returned with 0/68 and 1/104.
Although Kuldeep Yadav went wicketless in his solitary outing in England in the rain-hit Lord's Test in 2018, there have been calls to include the wrist-spinner for his attacking style and overall record versus England (21 wkts, avg 22.28).
However, Ten Doeschate also did not rule out spin bowling all-rounder Washington Sundar.
"There is a very strong chance of playing two spinners. It's just which two we play. All three spinners are bowling very nicely. Washi's batting very nicely. So it's just which combination do we go with? All-rounder spinner or the out-and-out spinner? And obviously, you have to play the bowling all-rounder again. So there are so many different variables," he said in a press conference.
Revealing that the pitch is dry and patchy and largely dry underneath, he said they are weighing up the two options. "We'd love to get Kuldeep on the team.
"Playing two all-rounders in the last game would have been nice. We know we are going to need two spinners in this game, it's about how we manage the 6-7-8 roles and whether we can fit Kuldeep in, now or sometime later in the series, where it will turn if the weather stays this way."
Ten Doeschate also confirmed Jasprit Bumrah's availability but said the team still has not decided whether he will be part of the playing XI....
