In a first, 'know your candidate' feature part of OBA poll campaign
LUCKNOW, July 29 -- Lawyers are trained to plead cases before judges in courts. But in a first, many of them presented their cases in the voters' court for three days as part of a novel feature - 'know your candidate' - added to the ongoing campaign for the election of officer bearers for the Oudh Bar Association (OBA) of the high court here.
The election committee earmarked three days - from July 23 - for the 'know your candidate' feature, and each candidate was given a time slot to address fellow lawyers in the OBA's hall and apprise the gathering about themselves, how many cases they have contested and their agenda. Proceedings on all three days, starting at 1.30pm, were live-streamed on YouTube.
On July 23, candidates contesting for the post of junior executive and senior executive addressed colleagues for 3 minutes. Those in the gathering were also allowed to ask questions from candidates.
Candidates contesting for the posts of joint secretary, vice-president (junior and middle) and treasurer addressed the gathering on July 24. They were given five minutes to brief the gathering about themselves and about their agenda.
On July 25, candidates contesting for the post of president, general secretary and vice president (senior) addressed the gathering for seven minutes.
"It was for the first time that such a feature of 'know your candidate' was added to the OBA election. It got an overwhelming response from candidates and voters (advocates)," said Desh Deepak Singh, election officer, who conducted the campaign on the three days.
"At the end of the speech, candidates also took questions from fellow advocates.
This exercise helped candidates apprise voters about themselves," added Desh Deepak.
Hectic campaigning for the prestigious OBA election came to an end on Monday. Voting will take place on Tuesday, counting of votes is scheduled on Wednesday while results are expected later in the evening. Senior advocate HGS Parihar has been appointed as returning officer.
He is being assisted by four assistant returning officers, including Sharad Pathak, Deepti Tripathi, Amit Jaiswal and Sharad Chandra Kashish....
