Mussoorie, Sept. 10 -- The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday issued a yellow alert for Uttarakhand for the next four days, warning of thunderstorms, lightning, and intense rainfall across several districts. On Tuesday morning, 173 roads were blocked due to landslides and boulder falls, disrupting connectivity in hilly districts. According to the State Emergency Operation Centre, multiple highways and rural roads have been affected across Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, Pithoragarh, and Chamoli, prompting urgent restoration efforts by the Public Works Department (PWD) and Border Roads Organisation (BRO) The Gangotri highway was blocked at three locations-Nalu Pani, Helugad, and Thirag-on Tuesday morning after fresh landslides. BRO teams with heavy machinery were deployed to clear the route. While traffic was restored between Dunda and Uttarkashi, access beyond Dabrani towards Harsil and Dharali was restricted to medium vehicles. On the Yamunotri highway, traffic remained blocked at five stretches, including Silai Bend, Jangal Chatti, and Banas. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) officials stationed in Barkot are engaged in round-the-clock operations to reopen the route. Overall, Uttarkashi reported 28 road closures, Rudraprayag 25, Pithoragarh 22, and Chamoli 36.
