Kanpur, Sept. 13 -- A police inspector was arrested on Friday in connection with the alleged illegal occupation of three-bigha Waqf land in Kanpur's Civil Lines, where a marriage lawn had been constructed. The arrest of inspector Sabhajeet Mishra was made when the officer arrived at the Gwaltoli police station to record his statement vis a vis the FIR in which he was named. His arrest was confirmed by Rajesh Pandey, staff officer to the Kanpur police commissioner. An FIR had earlier been registered against 7 individuals, including Mishra, lawyer Akhilesh Dubey, his brother Sarvesh, niece Soumya, and others, alleging that the inspector had facilitated encroachment and was threatening caretaker Nawab Moinuddin Asif Jah. According to records, the 3-bigha plot opposite Green Park stadium originally belonged to Nawab Mansoor Ali, who sold it to Sheikh Fakhruddin Haidar in 1892. Haidar subsequently dedicated the land as Waqf, with its upkeep entrusted to his descendants. In 1911, a 99-year lease was granted to his cousin Hafiz Haleem, during which tenants were settled on the property. The lease expired in 2010, following which the fifth-generation descendant, Moinuddin Asif, sought to have the tenants evicted. The matter, however, became embroiled in litigation. Police officials allege that Akhilesh Dubey induced some tenants to vacate with money and muscle, while others were forced out through prolonged legal cases. The land, valued in crores, was then allegedly taken over....
