Illegal call centre set-up busted in Delhi; cyber thug, aide arrested
LUCKNOW, Aug. 8 -- A murder convict who learned cybercrime in jail was arrested in Delhi by the Lucknow police, late on Wednesday night, exposing a sophisticated fraud racket that targeted people across India.
The Lucknow Police's Sarojininagar team, in coordination with the cyber crime cell, arrested Rahul Lakhera, 28, and his associate Vikas Kumar, 28, from Badarpur-Jaitpur area of South Delhi, and busted an illegal call centre setup.
"During interrogation, it emerged that Rahul, who had served four years in jail in a murder case, was mentored in prison by Nawab Khan, a notorious cybercriminal with cases pending in Faridabad and Noida," said DCP, South, Nipun Agarwal. Police say Khan, who is currently absconding, is the mastermind of the fraud network that spanned several states. "Rahul used to take 50% of the share and was in direct touch with Nawab. He sent malicious APK files to victims, which when opened, gave them full access to the target's mobile phone," added the DCP.
According to additional DCP Vasanth Rallapalli, using the access, the gang would steal OTPs, credit card credentials, and other sensitive data. The information was often bought for as little as Rs.10 per person from a Bihar-based data seller named 'Dubeji'.
"The gang then used this information to place online orders, particularly for mobile phones, which were later sold at discounted rates in the grey market," he added.
The DCP further added that the operation was being run from an illegal call centre at Vikas's house, where his childhood friends and even women staffers were hired at Rs.15,000 a month for cold-calling potential victims, posing as bank officials.
The breakthrough came after a Lucknow resident lost Rs.1.6 lakh in a similar scam and lodged an FIR at Sarojininagar Police Station. The cyber team traced the fraud to Delhi and conducted a raid on August 6.
"Police recovered 25 mobile phones, 1 laptop, 2 routers, 1 printer, 24 SIM cards and Rs.41,250," added the ADCP South. "A case has been registered under the IT Act and relevant BNS sections, and efforts are on to arrest Nawab Khan, who is believed to be still operating behind the scenes. The police team has been rewarded Rs.25,000 for their swift action," said DCP South....
