Husband, in-laws booked for hanging woman upside down from roof
Meerut, May 17 -- A man was booked for allegedly assaulting his wife and hanging her upside down from the roof of their house in Bareilly's Lathait locality under jurisdiction of Aonla police station. The incident, which occurred around 10 pm on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, sparked outrage after a video of the assault surfaced on social media.
According to the police, the accused, 40-year-old Nitin Singh, brutally beat his 38-year-old wife, Dolly, before attempting to kill her by hanging her upside down from the roof of their home.
Superintendent of police (south) Anishka Verma confirmed that an FIR has been registered against Nitin, his brother Amit Singh, Amit's wife and their mother under relevant sections of the BNS, based on a complaint filed by Dolly's brother, Raghunath Singh.
The complaint details a harrowing sequence of events. Raghunath, a resident of Wazirganj in Badaun, stated that Nitin had been harassing and physically abusing Dolly for years since their marriage 12 years ago. "Our family tried to counsel him many times, but Nitin didn't change," Raghunath said. On the night of the incident, Nitin allegedly thrashed Dolly, tied her feet and hung her upside down from the roof. After holding her in this position for approximately five minutes, he let go, causing her to fall headfirst.
Dolly's screams alerted neighbours, who rushed to the scene and intervened, preventing a potentially fatal injury. "Fortunately, some people caught her, otherwise she could have died," Raghunath said. The couple's 6-year-old son witnessed the incident and was seen crying as his mother fell, according to eyewitnesses.
Neighbours described a chaotic scene, with Nitin threatening those who attempted to intervene. "Whoever comes near, I'll deal with them," he reportedly shouted at the rescuers. Sudhir Kumar, a neighbour, recounted, "We heard Dolly screaming and saw Nitin had hung her upside down. When we tried to help, he threatened to beat us too. If we hadn't been there, he would have killed her."
A video recorded by someone at the scene captured the incident and has since gone viral on social media, prompting swift police action. CO Faridpur Nitin Kumar said that a case has been registered. htc...
