Host players off to a fine start in AITA event
LUCKNOW, Oct. 14 -- Uttar Pradesh's Ayra, Anusha Singh, Aashi Shamseri, Tashi Kiran and Raminderdweep Kaur made it to the pre-quarterfinals of the girls' singles after winning the first round of the AITA Super Series Under-18 Tennis Tournament here on Monday. In the boys' singles, Uttar Pradesh's third seed Rishi Yadav, fourth seed Aryaman Chavan, fifth seed Anuruddha Kumar, sixth seed Raghav Prabhu, Ansh Saxena, Harsh Singh, Anuj Kumar also reached the last 16. Aira defeated Haryana's Anya Sahni 6-4, 6-3, whereas Anusha Singh defeated Geetika Saraswat 6-3, 6-1. Aashi Shamshery defeated Devyani Shukla 6-0, 6-0, whereas Tashi Kiran and Raminder Deep Kaur received walkovers. In the boys' singles, top seed Harsh Malik of Haryana defeated Patterson Chhavi of Uttar Pradesh 6-2, 6-0. Ansh Saxena defeated Mohammad Sufian 7-6 (3), 2-6, 6-2, while Shaurya of Maharashtra defeated Virat Singh of Uttar Pradesh 6-1, 6-2.
Lucknow men stormed into the quarterfinals of the Senior Football Tournament, defeating Mirzapur 2-0 at Faizabad on Monday. The score remained goalless till the first half, but in the second half, Tariq Ansari and Farooq scored a goal each.
Young Lakshya Nigam won the 4th Krishan Baldev Mahana Chess Open with a better tiebreak ahead of Pawan Batham. Both scored six points. Unrated Himanshu Mishra played remarkably well and scored five points to win the unrated prize. But the star of the tournament was Navya Srivastava, who scored a perfect 7/7 points in the women's section. Daksh Arora won the junior section title with 6.5/7 points. The field was so tough that six players tied for second place - Pulkit Valecha, Abhijay Singh, Arnav Srivastava, Pranav Shanker Asthana, Dibbayan Chakraborty and Kartik Agarwal....
