High court seeks clear action on care, rehabilitation of destitute across UP
LUCKNOW, Dec. 1 -- The Lucknow bench of the Allahabad high court has directed state authorities to show better performance in rehabilitating destitute persons across all districts of Uttar Pradesh, saying it now wants a clear update on measures taken for their care and relocation.
A division bench of Justice Rajan Roy and Justice Subhash Vidyarthi passed the order on a PIL filed by Jyoti Rajput, who sought proper care and treatment for homeless individuals, including those with mental illnesses living in abandonment.
State counsel informed the court that 649 destitute persons had been identified in 16 districts and efforts were being made for their rehabilitation. The court expressed dissatisfaction and asked authorities to improve efforts in all districts.
Earlier, on July 11, 2024, the bench had directed the state to ensure attendants for medical treatment of the destitute persons named in the petition. It had also sought an affidavit detailing how many such cases were handled in the past year and how many individuals received attendants.
The petitioner told the court that homeless individuals were still visible across Lucknow. She acknowledged some action by authorities but said it remained insufficient. The court listed the matter for further hearing in the second week of January 2026....
