Henrik Ibsen's play staged with Indian twist
LUCKNOW, July 17 -- An Indian adaptation of Henrik Ibsen's 1896 classic play 'John Gabriel Borkman' was staged at Sant Gadgeji Maharaj Auditorium of U.P. Sangeet Natak Akademi (UPSNA) on Wednesday. Titled 'Makaan No. 7, Manali', the psychological drama was presented by the repertory of Bhartendu Natya Academy and directed by acclaimed theatre director Shubhdeep Raha.
The play explores the disintegration of a man's personality amidst ambition, family conflict, and unfulfilled dreams. Set in Manali, it follows the story of Vikram Devavrat (portrayed by Arghya Samanta and Anil Chaudhary), a former chit fund company owner who was once influential and ambitious.
Vikram misappropriated public funds and eventually served a jail sentence. Later, he is depicted living a solitary life.
His wife Chandra (Shrutikirti Singh) is worried about her son Raj (Ashutosh Jaiswal and Amit Harishchandra). Chandra's sister Isha (Apsara Khan), who was once Vikram's lover, is about to die of illness. Tension arises between the three characters regarding Raj as each wants to compensate for their failures.
