Helpline for kin of Mahakumbh stampede victims launched
PRAYAGRAJ, June 13 -- Advocate Forum, a panel of legal experts led by senior advocate KK Roy has started a helpline facility to assist family members of devotees who died in the stampede, in getting compensation. The stampede occurred on January 29, during Mahakumbh 2025 held in Prayagraj. According to Roy, who is also director of Human Rights Legal Network (HRLN), many families of devotees who died in the stampede had not received compensation as promised by the government.
Roy stated that the government had announced a compensation of Rs 25 lakh each to the families of the deceased, but still families of most of the deceased had failed to receive any compensation. He informed that a similar case was being heard in Allahabad high court also, wherein the court had summoned the list of all the dead and injured from the government.
According to him, a recent media report had claimed 82 deaths, contradicting the government's claim of 37 deaths so far.
