Dehradun, Aug. 27 -- Chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, during a meeting at his official residence on Tuesday, asked the state police to increase vigilance near inter-state borders to prevent the inflow of drugs. He also asked the police to intensify night patrolling, act strictly against drunk driving and asked officials to run "Drugs Free Devbhoomi" on a large scale. "Strict action should be taken against those involved in the smuggling of drugs," said Dhami, and instructed officials to publicise the National Narcotics Helpline- Manas (1-9-3-3) in order to make it easy for the public to register complaints. He also called for the Anti-Narcotic Task Force (ANTF) to be strengthened further, including creation of new posts as required. He also asked the police, health, education, social welfare and other departments to jointly hold workshops and prepare a detailed action plan, as well as calling for awareness programmes in schools and colleges to keep youth away from substance abuse. In August 2022, the state police formed the three-tier ANTF, as part of the chief minister's programme to create a drug free state by 2025. The ANTF's nodal officer at the state level is the senior superintendent of police (special task force), under the additional director general of police or inspector general of police's supervision. ADGP, law and order, V Murugesam had said, "We are on the right track to make Uttarakhand drug free by the end of this year. We are focusing on two areas, first enforcement, by striking down at the supply chain and people who deal in commercial quantities, and second, we are running awareness campaigns at the district level in schools and colleges." In a post on X about the meeting, Dhami wrote, "In the morning, a meeting was held with the police and senior officials at the official residence to realise the resolve of 'Drug Free Uttarakhand'." "During this, instructions were given to ensure the strictest action against drug peddlers and mafias across the state, along with strengthening the Anti-Narcotic Task Force further, increasing the number of night checks throughout the state, and ensuring special vigilance and strict checks in border areas," the X post added....
